The Cold Regions Research Centre (CRRC) is hosted its 37th student annual conference Jan. 29-31, 2025.
We are excited to invite students from all research stages and early career researchers to share their research. Presentations will include oral presentations, poster presentations, and 3-minute higlight talks.
The CRRC student conference also consists of a keynote, a panel session, a field training workshop, and a social event.
The Cold Regions Research Centre (CRRC) hosted its annual student conference, CRRC-Days 2023, Nov. 23-24, 2023.
We are excited to showcase Early Career Researchers (ECRs) from all research stages, including the proposal stage. Presentations will include both conference-length (12 minutes) and 3MT talks. New this year, we also will be including short (one minute) video presentations. CRRC-Days also includes a keynote by Dr. Zdanowicz, a panel featuring Dr. Jordan Musetta-Lambert, Dr. Raquel Alfaro-Sánchez and Dr. Lucy Poley, and a workshop where you’ll create your own infographic for your research.
Winners
The Early Career Researchers Leadership Committee of the Cold Regions Research Centre (CRRC) is proud to announce the winners of the 2023 CRRC Days.
- For the 12-Minutes Presentations: Winner is Katie Hettinga from the University of Waterloo for their talk on “Non-growing season CO2 emissions may offset a substantial fraction of the growing season CO2 uptake in Canadian peatlands.” Runner up is Arash Rafat and third is Eric Jolin, both from Wilfrid Laurier University. Special congrats to Eric for being in the top 3 for two years in a row!
- For the 3-Minute Thesis Presentations: Winner is Narayan Subramoniam from Wilfrid Laurier University for their talk on “Estimating Nutrition North Canada subsidy pass-through rates in Northwest Territories.” Runner up is Keira McManus and third is Sabrina St-Hillaire, both from Wilfrid Laurier University.
We also wanted to send a special thanks to Taylor Hayhurst from Wilfrid Laurier University and Petri Matthew Varsa from the University of Waterloo for their videos this year, a new addition to the CRRC Days. It’s not easy to be the first to try something new. We hope to continue this form of presentation next year so for all CRRC researchers make sure to take videos of yourself in action during the year.
Conference Highlights
Keynote by Dr. Christian Zdanowicz: Nov. 23, 2023, 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Dr. Zdanowicz is a Geologist, glaciologist and geochemist, educated in Canada (MSc Carleton Univ. 1994), the USA (PhD Univ. New Hampshire, 1999) and formerly a researcher with Natural Resources Canada (1999-2012). He joined Uppsala University, Sweden, in 2013 as Associate Professor (Docent).
Dr. Zdanowicz studies the impacts of climate warming and atmospheric pollution in the Arctic. Over the past 13 years, he has investigated how atmospheric mercury is transported, deposited in, and released from, the Arctic cryosphere, as well as how mercury cycling is coupled with Arctic climate variability and change. His presentation will look back on what he’s learned, how it was learned, and the questions that remain, drawing on research carried out in Nunavut, the Yukon, and NWT
